Latino Caucus Newsletter: July 2019
Dear Members,
I am excited to serve as your Caucus Chair for the upcoming two-year term. What an amazing representation by the Latino Caucus members at the biennial. I was impressed by the 16 pages of presentations by caucus members, the Latino Caucus shirts I spotted around the conference, and attendance at the Latino Caucus events. SRCD leadership has taken notice! I am excited to be the voice of our members and look forward to hearing from you on ways we can represent you within SRCD.
As chair I have met with the steering committee and with SRCD leadership to begin planning for the next two years. We are looking for caucus members interested in serving as Consulting Editors for Child Development. A google form was distributed through the listserv. The steering committee also sent out a survey on the code of conduct at the biennial. Thank you to all our members who completed the survey. Be on the lookout for a member vote on several changes to the bylaws in the coming months.
Also, I would like to welcome the new Caucus, Sexual Orientation Gender Expression and Identity (SOGIE)! This fall be on the lookout for:
- Resources on the use of the term Latinx
- A member vote on the use of the term Latinx
- A member vote on creating a social policy subcommittee
- A member vote on term limits for Steering Committee members
- Member spotlights

Creating a Safe Space for our Members
The SRCD Quad-Caucus is seeking anonymous feedback regarding any incidences that violated our code of conduct at the 2019 SRCD Conference. We would like to hear your ideas for training and resources to ensure our meetings provide a safe space for members.
Special Topics Meeting 2020
The Latino Caucus Steering Committee organized a special topic meeting titled “Construction of the Other: Development, Consequences, and Applied Implications of Prejudice and Discrimination.” The meeting will take place May 4-6, 2020 in Puerto Rico and the submissions site opens mid-September. Post Conference Updates
A Tribute to Dr. Ray Buriel
The Latino Caucus presented a symposium at the 2019 Biennial Meeting in tribute to Dr. Ray Buriel, who passed away in 2017, with Dr. Buriel’s family in attendance. The symposium was moderated by Dr. Buriel’s former student, Dr. James Rodríguez. Comments from past Caucus Chair Dr. Linda Halgunseth, former student Dr. William Pérez, and Dr. Buriel’s son Dr. Juan Ramón Buriel highlighted Dr. Buriel’s contributions in three areas of research: generational differences, language brokering, and Chicano studies more broadly. Former students Dr. Julia Love, Stefanie Martínez-Fuentes, and Kayla Puente along with colleagues Drs. Barbara Rogoff and Cynthia Garcia Coll also spoke on their memories of Dr. Buriel. Dr. Garcia Coll was presented with the inaugural Raymond Buriel Distinguished Leadership Award, and Dr. Buriel’s family was presented with a plaque honoring Dr. Buriel’s Distinguished Leadership in the Field, a memory book, and a SRCD Latino Caucus t-shirt. A reception honoring Dr. Buriel closed out the events. To continue recognition of Dr. Buriel’s legacy of mentorship, look for an article on this topic to be released by the Latino Caucus later this year.
Town Hall Meeting: A Call to Action
The SRCD 2019 Biennial Meeting program included a Town Hall Meeting called “SRCD at the Intersection of Science and Social Policy.” The session, moderated by Drs. Gabriela Livas- Stein and Deborah Johnson, featured a panel consisting of Drs. Natasha Cabrera, Richard Lee, Laura Namy, Seth Pollak, Barbara Rogoff, Eleanor Seaton, and Emilie Smith. President Dr. Ken Dodge and President-Elect Dr. Nancy Hill were also in attendance. The session was held partly in response to SRCD’s initial statement concerning the U.S. policy of separating Latinx families at the US/Mexico border, and the resulting frustration and disappointment among segments of the membership. The well-attended session focused on an open dialogue regarding SRCD’s response to policies and how SRCD proactively can use science to inform social policy. In addition, members in attendance called for SRCD to be responsive to scientists of color and to promote research on children and families of color. Since the Town Hall Meeting, SRCD Governance has reached out to leadership of the Ethnic & Racial Issues Committee, Equity and Justice Committee, and the Caucuses on how to move forward concerning the issues raised by members during the session.
